Here's a little something about me...
My name is Ava Bayley. I am 14 years old. I was born in Portland, Oregon and have lived here my whole life. Art is a large part of my life, and it’s something I just really like to do. I weave and watch TV in most of my free time, when I’m not playing soccer. My weekends are filled with soccer with my club team PCU. I am definitely a textile artist.I have been since my first year. I had never taken textiles before and I didn’t know the first thing about it when I started, but after three years of loving it, I can knit, crochet, weave, dye, felt, sew and embroider. I will carry these skills on with me for a long time.
My capstone is Textiles, and my theme is Challenge Yourself. I came up with this theme during the summer time. I often talk to my textiles friend Kirstin Cornell about projects. I used to be very reserved in what I made. I used simple patterns and only the nicest string. Whenever I was hesitant to branch out, she would always tell me the same thing:“Ava, you need to challenge yourself.” I took that to heart. I wanted to be better, but I was scared of failure. I started trying new things. Kirstin was the one to convince me to try something new with my weaving, “Blue Breeze.” And I won a National Scholastic Silver key award for it. I really wanted to look inside myself, and I wanted to take advantage of the opportunities I have at da Vinci.. When I leave I will continue to weave and knit, but I wanted to take advantage of this year and the people around me to really learn new things and branch out more than ever. I have learned a lot this year and I have been able to narrow down what I like vs what I don’t like. This year I won two Scholastic silver key awards and a gold key award for my textiles I also won a National Silver key award for my weaving, “Blue Breeze.” It is a huge honor to be recognized for the countless hours of hard work that I put into my art. Please don’t touch the art… just kidding... it's made to be enjoyed and touched!
